Following his receiving the Ken Jones Amateur Boxer of the Year award, at the Boxing Writers' Association awards dinner at the Millennium Hotel in London, European Bantamweight Champion Luke Campbell took a short break in the capital.
Luke, who travelled to London from his home in Hull, was presented with the award in recognition of his magnificent achievement in becoming the first British boxer to become European champion since 1961.Whilst in the capital Luke took the opportunity to visit Rooney’s Boxing Gym to spend some time with his former Team GB coach Terry Edwards MBE.
Southpaw Luke, who is recuperating from tendon surgery on his left hand following an injury sustained earlier this year, spoke about the Amateur Boxer of the Year award, Terry Edwards MBE and his injury. “I feel really proud. I feel that I really want to get my head down even more now. It’s a huge honour and I want to be there again and not let any of them down that have supported me.
We met up at the awards and as we haven’t seen each other in a while I thought it would be nice to spend some time with Terry while I am in London.
I wouldn’t have had the success I have had if it wasn’t for Terry. He’s brilliant, every time I speak with Terry I learn something new, I feel good in myself, which is what it’s all about. It’s what I want to do. I want to learn, I want to improve.
My injury, well in March this year I was in a training camp in Kazakhstan and I split my tendon on my knuckle, and I put a hole in my joint as well. I’ve had to carry on fighting with a split tendon all the way until now, because I’ve been busy. Now I’ve had a bit of time to get things done. I’ve only just had the operation. It’s quite a serious operation as well. I’ll be out for anything between three to nine months. I’m hoping to be hitting on it in January.”
Luke, who has been tipped as one of Great Britain’s main medal hopes at the 2012 London Olympics, is expected to return to the Team GB training facility in Sheffield shortly to continue his preparations to defend his European crown in 2010.
